For those who prefer a raw workflow outside of the Adobe scope of operations, Phase One is a pretty popular choice and one which not only supports most high-end DSLRs but also many digital medium format camera backs. The most recent incarnation is version 5.0, which was just released last week, and offers some pretty nice workflow innovations. I’ve already spoken to a couple photographers who are really getting some mileage out of the new Focus Tool which allows you to instantly see your image focus points while evaluating your shots.
But really the big draw for Capture One has been its tethered shooting capabilities, offering a much better user experience than you typically get from OEM software like Nikon Capture or Canon’s capture utility. There are also some skin enhancement tools to streamline retouching workflow for portrait gurus, but I can’t claim to have tested any of these features yet. That’s why I’m downloading the Capture One v5 free trial. The PITA part is that a Phase login is required to download the trial, so be prepared to fill out a web form, confirm your email addy, etc.
